Prophecy of the Light

We have entered a new year in the church. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year for the church. Advent is a time of expectant waiting leading us towards the Feast of Christmas. It is also a time of expectant waiting the future of the earth and Christ's Second Coming.

Before Jesus' birth, the people of God were given prophets who spoke of many things. Some things were of destruction and some were of hope, but their job was to bring the Word of God to the people while reminding them that they didn't worship a god like the ones of the surrounding nations, but that they worships the One True God who created the heavens and the earth and who handed them the Law in order that they could provide for themselves and their families all while being a holy people.

Isaiah was one of those prophets. He spoke of a coming Messiah early on in the Book of Isaiah.

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;" Is. 9:2a ESV

What is it like to be in the dark? For many throughout the ages the dark has never symbolized anything good, and yet even the ancient pagans celebrated the coming of a light in the Winter Solstice. Even they recognized that though the night be long dawn will always come. How much greater a dawn we have been given in Jesus Christ!

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone." Is. 9:2 ESV

Over 700 years later Jesus spoke these words: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12 ESV

Christ is the light that was prophesied in Isaiah. Christ is the light which brings hope and healing to a world that is ever becoming more and more chaotic and dark. I have heard it said that the darkest part of the night is just before the dawn. If this is true then Come Lord Jesus. Come.

So this Advent season as we look towards the Feast of Christmas and the celebration of Jesus' birth, the day God became Human, let us also look towards the coming light of Christ's Second Coming with great expectation and anticipation.
